UMBC’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics encompasses a multitude of research areas in both the mathematics and statistics disciplines. Research in the area of mathematics focuses on Numerical Analysis and Computational Mathematics, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, Mathematical Modeling and Simulation, Mathematical Biology, Optimization and Control, and Probability and Stochastic Processes. Statistical research areas include: Computational Statistics, Bayesian Statistics, Decision Theory and Inference, Environmental Statistics, Multivariate Statistics, and Time Series Analysis. 33 faculty members and approximately 90 graduate students work on mathematical research topics that fall within the aforementioned specialty areas. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics also offers services to aid in research efforts, both within the department and the college, at several centers including the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Consulting (CIRC), and the UMBC High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF).
